a note from Spencer

I love equipping the saints for the work of ministry. God has recently opened doors for me to invest in the church through teaching and training. If you’re interested in bringing me in to speak at your next event, lead a workshop, or help train your ministry team—I’d love to hear from you.

Speaking

Sacred Power //
C&MA General Council, June 2, 2021

I had the privilege of preaching at Alliance General Council - the biennial gathering of the U.S. Christian & Missionary Alliance - in Nashville, TN. The primary theme of my message was centered on John 15 and a call to abide in Jesus as a deeper life and missions movement.

Come & See //
ACAC, April 6, 2025

I was preaching at our home church in between a series on spiritual formation and Holy Week. The theme of this message on how curiosity is an essential posture for lifelong discipleship as we reflect on Jesus’ first invitation to his disciples in John 1: “Come and see.”

EquippingU Podcast // A Pastor’s Journey, May 15, 2022

EquippingU is a podcast developed by the C&MA to equip healthy church leaders to lead healthy churches, and it’s one of my favorites. On this episode, I joined my friends Terry Smith, Alan Rathbun, and Katlyn Giberson to share my own story and we covered quite a few ideas and topics that I care deeply about, including being rooted in a place, loving a city well, racial tensions in the church, and leading through a pandemic.

Believe to See // The Allusionist Pastor, October 28, 2020

This is a podcast hosted by Matt Mellema and my friend Mandy Houk for the Anselm Society, a local group that cultivates Christian imagination. I joined the show because Mandy heard a bunch of literary references in my sermons, and so this discussion digs into how my background in English literature and love of reading informs my work as a pastor. We also talk a bit about how the arts shape the ministry of the Church.
